The Gambia has long been a destination for Europeans (locally called 'Toubabs') to meet Gambians, often much younger, for sex and sometimes love. From the outside, it may seem these relationships are purely transactional - the European bringing money (and potential access to a European visa), the Gambian bringing their youthfulness and sexuality, which might be harder to find back in Europe. These portraits were made without judgement, to create a dialogue around desire, love, companionship, colonialism, security, cultural taboos and personal power.
