At Gambia's Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) testimony by one of former president Jammeh’s hit squad revealed that in 2013, Mahawa and businessman Saul Ndow were lured into a trap in Senegal by a close friend of Mahawa, who was in the pay of Jammeh. According to the testimony, they were abducted by Jammeh’s hit squad in Senegal, transported back to the Gambia and killed in Jammeh’s village, Kanilai.
The witness said "Upon arrival, we opened the farm store and took cutlasses, proceeded to the execution ground called the ‘camel farm’. The 'camel farm' is situated at the ‘Kanilai Family Farm’ owned by president Jammeh. Ndow and Cham were suffocated with nylon bags, their bodies cut into pieces and disposed of”.
