(LEFT) Fatou Jammeh, sister of Lt. Lamin ‘LF’ Jammeh of the Gambian army, photographed at home in Farato. ‘LF’ was accused of being part of an attempted coup in 1994, but escaped to Senegal. In 1997 he returned to The Gambia to attack Kartong Barracks in the hope of toppling president Yahya Jammeh’s regime, but he was captured, tortured, and sentenced to life in prison. In 2012, Yahya Jammeh ordered the execution of nine inmates, including ‘LF’. Although the government admitted the executions, accounts emerged from eyewitnesses disputing the manner of the executions as reported by the government. Witnesses said ‘LF’ and the others were not shot by a firing squad as reported but suffocated with plastic bags.
